Idiots Introduction to Sustainability

Sustainable agriculture. Sustainable economy. Sustainable bags, buildings and boots. In today’s ‘environment’ sustainability seems to sound like an overused and wide ranging term which can be applied to almost anything, yet how many people can give a precise and concise definition as to what it actually means?
The broadest definition of sustainability is “the ability to keep in existence or maintain”. In its broadest sense sustainability is a concept – in other words, an idea or a notion which is on its way to being or has not yet been fully feasible. The goal or potential for long term maintenance and well being of human life is heavily dependent upon the maintenance and well being of the natural world as well as the use of its resources. To achieve overall sustainability (on all fronts) or the definition of ideal sustainability (long term maintenance of human life) is theoretically made up of the reconciliation of 3 pillars or areas of sustainability to maintain human life’s dependence on) these are social, environmental and economical.
For the purposes of this article we shall say environmental sustainability is the most widely connotated aspect of sustainability, when we hear sustainability, we immediately think of global warming, pollution, renewable energy and the likes thereof.
Natural resources are being used by all industries, some more than others, the way in which they are used and also the amounts they are being used in will determine the potential and the extent to which this goal can be achieved
In the 1970’s it was widely becoming obvious that there is a fanatic limit to the earth’s resources and since then vast amounts of scientific research and evidence has proved that sustainability is still only a concept, a potential term and has not yet been achieved, therefore we are living in a state of unsustainability. At present, the earth cannot continue supporting human life as it is known to us, on a long term basis. Once sustainability is achieved in all areas through collective effort, it is not to say the earth will be able to continue supporting human life without compromise. It is important to note that although thinking sustainably will generate innovative approaches and solutions to the challenges we face, it will not eliminate these challenges, unless we eliminate on non renewable natural resources.
Rather than defining sustainability as a concept or a potential goal, I would say sustainability is a journey. The destination is the almost complete and total elimination of our dependence on inevitably non sustainable resources, and sustainable development is the route to our destination. The element of not knowing exactly how long the journey is and the compromise of forsaking resources along the way should not hinder us in travelling sustainably. Having said all this, the concept of sustainability is what it is, its goals and how these should be achieved, (e.g. sustainable development) is a different variety now to what it was twenty years ago from now, in other words, the terms and …

Introduction to Building Services and Construction

Building Services
Other than the term “Building Services”, other term that frequently being used is MEP (Mechanical Electrical and Plumbing), M & E (Mechanical and Electrical). This depends on the country / region preferences of which term to use.
Basically, M&E Services are all the services within one building, which without them the building is inhabitable.
M&E Services Standard Home Design Consist of:
1. Hot and Cold Water System Cold water system is a system that supports the supply of fresh water to the building from the external source. This fresh water source is provided by either a municipal water company or a private underground well. If the source is provided by a municipal water company, the water will pass through a water meter before it enters building. This meter is used to measure the consumption of the water within that particular building.
2. Sanitary System
Sanitary system is simply a drainage system dedicated for the waste water produced within a building to flow to an external water treatment centre which is usually operated by authority. After the water being treated it will then be discharged to the sea. This water treatment centre may be located at a few kilometers distance away from the building, so it needs a system/channel for the waste water to flow. This kind of system is what usually referred as ‘sanitary system’ in construction term. Not all regions within a country have such a system, since it requires more efforts and capital to build this kind of infrastructure. But however, this is one of the best practice systems
3. Gas System
Gas system is a system to provide gas supply through gas pipe to household. The gas pipe may travel few kilometers distance from the centre which is usually operated by the authority to end users (household). Again this service is also only provided in certain regions. So the region that has this facility, conventional method of distributing gas through cylinder gas tank might not be used anymore in the household application
4. Air Conditioning and Mechanical Ventilation
Air-conditioning system is already popular in our society nowadays. Most of the households and offices in city already installed air-conditioning system. Air-conditioning system functions to create a comfort temperature room for human to stay inside. This is especially true when the ambient temperature is hot.
Mechanical ventilation is a system to create air circulation mechanically within a confined space which is achieved by installing fans. Logically thinking, mechanical ventilation is not needed if the air circulation within one space / room is alright. However this condition is not always true, especially within basement floor. Basement area is lower than the circumference level, so wind will blow straight from the surrounding level straight. As a result, area which is lower than that is hardly affected.
5. Fire Protection System
Fire protection system is the system to protect the building and occupants in case of fire. This service is a bit different compare to other services. It seems like …

Construction And The Environment – Introduction

As seen in my previous articles, construction is among the major human activities that result to landmark products. The activities of construction produce items that stand on land replacing natural features or even changing them. Some of the activities change the landscape by either adding or omitting some of them. Construction also makes use of a good number of materials borrowed from the environment, whether in their natural state or in a processed form. Furthermore, the usage of the product of construction leads to the production of elements of waste which are then directed to the environment, mostly in a cleansed manner, although in most cases, this is not fully accomplished.
In all these activities, the environment is impacted in one way or the other. In many occasions, they are detrimental to the environment, with the only variable being the degree and nature of such impact. While some effects are short – term and easily overcome, others are irreversible and thus leave a permanent mark on our environment.
Being among a global concern, environmental impact reduction should be reduced, reversed and even prevented from occurring by all that are involved. This will include all stakeholders in the construction industry, as it is a potential cause of such ills to our environment. The following are just a few ways that various players in the construction industry can use to achieve environmental friendly projects:
A Prospective builders should be advised on the need and ways of building environmental friendly buildings.
A Designers should see to it that matters environment are handled with utmost care in all projects they handle.
A Statutory bodies should ensure that Electrician Job Salary designs and methodologies adopted for any upcoming projects are in tandem with the responsibility of environmental care and sustainability.
A Occupiers should ensure that no activity that Sub Contract Work Definition they are engaged in result to environmental jeopardy.
When all and sundry understand the need and the ways of caring for the environment, then we will be a step closer to good environmental impact management as far as construction is concerned. It is also worth noting that for such a goal to be successful, it calls for the collective responsibility by all. Otherwise, the sweat of one person will be watered down by the ignorance or omission of the other. Teaching all the stake holders on these matters will make sure that they have a clear knowledge of how to minimize the detriment that has continued to eat away our environment.…
